Tower Lighting

October 21st Fact-of-the-Day

The governments of most countries require warning lights on all high towers and on low towers near airports, because towers are hazards to aircraft. Warning lights are not required on most Amateur Radio towers because they are not high enough or close enough to an airport to fall within the requirements. However, warning lights are required on some Amateur Radio towers and severe penalties and legal liabilities can result from not complying with lighting rules. Where lighting is required it is possible to double lamp replacement periods by installing two lamps at each location where a light is needed and then connecting a small relay so that it automatically switches power to lamp 2 upon failure of lamp 1. ©2004 Tigertek, Inc.
