Two Types of Ferrite

April 17th Fact-of-the-Day

There are two basic types of ferrite, hard ferrite and soft ferrite. However, those designations can be misleading, because they refer to magnetic, rather than physical properties. Both types are physically-rigid ceramic crystalline material. However, the magnetization of hard ferrite is permanent in the sense that its magnetic field strength decays very little with time after magnetization and the magnetization of soft ferrite is temporary in the sense that its magnetic field strength decays very quickly with time. Hard ferrite is used in permanent magnet applications such as magnetic door latches, loud speakers, and microwave oven magnetrons. Soft ferrite is used to make inductors, transformers, radio frequency interference filters, and surfaces that reflect very little radio frequency electromagnetic energy. ©2005 Martek International All rights reserved.
