FerromagnetismJuly 27th Fact-of-the-DayCertain materials have a property called ferromagnetism that gives them relative magnetic permeabilities exceeding unity (free space has a relative magnetic permeability of unity). Ferromagnetism results from the spontaneous alignment of electron magnetic moments associated with spin. Materials exhibiting ferromagnetism are called ferromagnetic. In practice the relative permeabilities of various ferromagnetic materials range from slightly more than unity to about 1,000,000 (10^6). (There generally are considered to be three basic magnetic forces: 1) paramagnetic, 2) ferromagnetic, and 3) diamagnetic. However, ferromagnetic actually is an extreme case of paramagnetic.) ©2005 Tigertek, Inc. All rights reserved. This page was last modified: Sun, 06 Jun 2010 03:37:21 GMT
