Copper Wire Hardness

September 17th Fact-of-the-Day

Most people are familiar with soft and hard-drawn copper wire. However, there are more grades than just those. Soft is also called dead-soft. It has a hardness number of zero, because it isn't drawn through a hole in a plate or otherwise worked to harden it. Quarter-hard is drawn through a hole in a plate once. Half-hard is drawn through progressively-smaller holes twice. Hard is drawn through progressively-smaller holes four times. Spring wire is drawn through progressively-smaller holes eight times. ©2004 Martek, International. All rights reserved.
