Frequency Scaling

September 2nd Fact-of-the-Day

The performance of small-scale models of large antennas, cavity resonators, and other expensive components sometimes is evaluated prior to their construction, but the results can be misleading. For example, if a microwave cavity is scaled down in size by a factor of ten, its resonant frequency will be scaled up by a factor of ten. However, the minimum bandwidths of its resonant modes will increase by a factor of approximately 32 due to skin effect differences between the two frequencies. ©2004 Tigertek, Inc.
