About all that can be done to improve reception with a dipole antenna is to position it so that it has the clearest possible path from the transmitting station, which generally means as high as possible, and to orient it horizontally if the transmitting station is using horizontal polarization or vertically if it is using vertical polarization.

I don't about the broadcasting station whether it is hori. or vert.
How to know about this??

You should be able to obtain that information from engineers at the stations you want to receive or from the Telcom Regulatory Authority of India http://www.trai.gov.in if they are Indian stations.

FM broadcast stations throughout much of the world originally transmitted horizontally-polarized signals, but many eventually changed to circular polarization. If the signals you want to receive are circularly polarized the orientation of your receiving antenna probably won't make much difference, although at individual receiving locations one polarization or the other generally tends to be stronger.

If the FM stations you want to receive are public-service stations, such as police, fire, ambulance, etc., instead of public broadcast stations, the polarization will almost certainly be vertical.

They may not have the information posted at their website, but the Telcom Regulatory Authority should be able to answer your question if you contact them personally.

OK, pls tell i am from DEHRADUN (INDIA) the channel i receive is from DELHI (INDIA), i want to straight distance b/w these two states, how to calculate it as by road it is 270Km.

There is no way to calculate a straight-line distance from a road distance. However, a program like Microsoft's MapPoint can be used to find the straight-line distance between two geographical locations.

According to MapPoint, the distance from the center of Dehrandun to the center of Delhi is 201.2 KM (125 miles). However, broadcast transmitters usually are located in the outskirts of cities, so the exact distance between you and the transmitter probably is a little different.

That is a long distance for good results with a simple dipole receiving antenna. A dipole may yield acceptable results if it is mounted high above ground, away from sources of electrical interference, there aren't any major physical obstructions between it and the transmitting antenna in Delhi, and the broadcast station has a high power transmitter. However, you could easily receive ten or more times as much signal using a directional antenna such a Yagi instead of a dipole.
