helical verticals for top band

by fredem » 20 Apr 2010, 05:21

Hello All. Nowhere have I seen a discussion about the possibility of winding a full length resonant wire into a supported helix in cases where there are no overhead support opportunities. Not knowing enough about the topic I don't know where to begin with this topic.
The question- what happens when you space wind 528' of wire onto a PVC or Fiberglass form for 160M operation?
Thanks in advance.

The resulting performance depends on the diameter of the coil, the length of the coil, the wire gauge, and losses in the ground system. To maximize performance the coil diameter should be large, the coil length should be long, the largest possible wire gauge should be used, and the antenna should be used with a low-resistance ground radial system. The radiation efficiency can be reasonably good at the resonant frequency if all those conditions are met. However, the antenna bandwidth will be considerably narrower than for a standard quarter-wave vertical.
