Is Ham Radio a Black Hole?

Maybe it has been different for you, but up until about fifteen years ago when I became interested in Ham Radio I had many interests. Now all I do and think about is Ham Radio. I am sucked back in whenever I try to leave as if Ham Radio is a huge Black Hole with irresistible attraction. The same thing seems to have happened to many hams. How about you?

I had never thought about it that way before, but you're right, at least in my case. For years most of my free time has been spent dreaming about my next antenna, rig, an upcoming contest, convention, or some other ham related issue. Normal people who haven't been infected with the ham radio bug think we're nuts. Maybe we are, but if so, it's sure fun being nuts!

I don't think the situation is much different than with lots of other interests. Plenty of people become just as absorbed in other interests like music, religion, fishing, golf, or whatever. Some people seem to have few if any interests. Some people have many. Some people focus most of their time and free spending money primarily on one.
