Spiral wound vs coil spring wound loading coils

by WA6ATI » 13 Feb 2006, 19:30

Has anyone experimented with flat spiral wound coils rather than the conventional linear wound coils used in most center loaded antenna for H.F. mobile application?

I've seen this technique used in some VHF applications used in certain consumer electronic equipment where the coil is actually etched into the circuit board. My thought was to use some of the G-10 circuit board material I have here and etch a spiral trace to create a coil of about 38 to 45 micro henries.

I was just wondering if anyone there has considered using this type of design and if so share some ideas.

Flat spiral wound coils

It seems reasonable that flat spiral wound loading coils would have lower losses, especially if used as base loading coils. It is an interesting idea, but I have never tried it.

Hello,
Try looking at Harry's Homebrew Homepage [http://web.telia.com/~u85920178/index.htm]. He has used a FLAT SPIRAL coil on several of his projects, especially home-brew TXs and RXs. His website was where I first saw the idea several years ago.
