The server had shut down unexpectedly a couple times during the day. I found a contact in the clip holds the battery that maintains BIOS settings in CMOS had tarnished and BIOS settings were corrupted. The server is a 19-inch rack-mount box that normally runs without a keyboard, mouse or video monitor, because it is not used locally. Wrong settings caused it to function as though it was a laptop computer, rather than a server. It kept trying to go into hibernation mode, because neither a keyboard nor mouse was being used. I cleaned the contact, replaced the battery, and restored correct BIOS settings. Only time will tell whether that actually fixed the problem, but what I found is consistent with what had been happening.
