Scheduled Server Testing & Maintenance

by admin » 30 Jun 2005, 05:23

The S-Meter website will be taken off-line June 30 at approximately 0600 UTC for scheduled testing and maintenance of one of our servers. SLC, Pahrump and Dallas receiver audio streaming will continue for those connected before that server goes down, so long as users don't disconnect and there are no Internet service interruptions. Ogden receiver streaming will be down until that server comes back on line. The estimated down-time is two to three hours, but that is a very rough estimate.

Server repair

by admin » 30 Jun 2005, 22:40

The server had shut down unexpectedly a couple times during the day. I found a contact in the clip holds the battery that maintains BIOS settings in CMOS had tarnished and BIOS settings were corrupted. The server is a 19-inch rack-mount box that normally runs without a keyboard, mouse or video monitor, because it is not used locally. Wrong settings caused it to function as though it was a laptop computer, rather than a server. It kept trying to go into hibernation mode, because neither a keyboard nor mouse was being used. I cleaned the contact, replaced the battery, and restored correct BIOS settings. Only time will tell whether that actually fixed the problem, but what I found is consistent with what had been happening.

Server Repairs

The repaired server has worked flawlessly since the 30 June repairs, so it appears that the tarnished battery contact and resulting incorrect BIOS settings caused the problem.
