Receiving Session Files

by admin » 02 Jan 2006, 09:40

Pahrump receiving session files are 72.65 MB each and are therefore too large to reasonably provide for downloading. They also are in format that cannot be played by a Mac.

:(

quick question, what is the file format of the 72.65 mb file? from what i know, aside from streaming formats, the mac with the great vlc media player can playback virtually any file format with the exception of a wmv3 encoded file.

i may end up having to buy an el cheapo peecee just for smeter and art.

or how much do ham receivers cost? do they make any with a sound line-out port?

thanks for the help

Pahrump Session Files

The audio file name extension is wma. However, wma files have a wide variety of different audio formats. The audio format we use cannot be played on Mac.

Very inexpensive Windows PCs are available both new and used. That seems like a good option.

Communications receiver cost varies widely. Old models of some receivers are available for less than $100. Newer models generally cost several hundred dollars. Some high-end transceivers that include both transmitters and receivers cost $10,000 or more.

Most modern communications receivers have speaker, earphone, and line-level audio outputs. Older models generally have speaker and earhphone outputs.

hi bob thanks for the replies.

i think i have come up with a solution, i have a copy of virtual pc which emulates a true pc environment. i went ahead and installed the latest version of windows media player and internet explorer, but i still get no audio. i am running windows 2000 by the way, not xp.

i remember reading somewhere that having a wireless connection is not as good as a direct ethernet cable link. is this true? i currently have a wireless setup at home, so i'm wondering if there are any tricks or hints that those currently using wireless and streaming smeter feeds successfully can share.

thanks

Streaming Audio with Virtual PC

by admin » 04 Jan 2006, 06:29

It is true that wireless Internet connections are not as good as wired ones. One reason, for example, is that communications can occur in only one direction at a time, rather than in both directions simultaneously. However, it is very unlikely that your wireless connection is causing your problem. S-Meter site audio streams work fine over wireless Internet connections.

If Virtual PC emulates Windows 2000 and you installed the latest version of Windows Media Player (Series 10) you installed the wrong version. Windows 2000 supports Windows Media Player 9, but not 10. If you installed 10, uninstall it, install 9, and let me know whether that solved your problem. If not, I will give you some things to check.

Windows 2000 Emulation

Maybe Virtual PC doesn't fully emulate all Windows 2000 functions, because Windows Media Player 9 works fine with a real Windows 2000 installation.
