Update On the Tennessee Receiving Station

by K4ZE » 17 Aug 2006, 01:58

We have been having a pretty bad line noise problem lately. It seems to be more severe during the daytime. But it still isn't fixed yet. We had a pretty bad storm the other day, I guess it must have caused it. Boy I sure will be glad when the summer storms are over. We are having cooler weather now though and that is such a great relief. It has really been nice weather wise here. Hope to have the noise problem fixed soon. It really has been a long while since we had this problem and I was just thinking, "boy it sure has been nice NOT to have that line noise for so long," then here it is again.....I guess you should never brag about anything, oh well.

Also I talked with Bob about putting my radio software display up here at smeter. I am trying it out now at my website at http://patriciaray.net/index1.html or http://k4ze.com. You can check it out if you are curious. It is a live cam, which takes snapshots of my pc screen which runs the n4py program for the Jupiter. From what I can tell so far, I think it will be really neat, letting the smeter audience a chance to see what frequency we are currently running. Just thought you might want to know.
Take care,

"Variety" The Spice of Life

by K4ZE » 17 Aug 2006, 20:31

Lately, I'm trying to write down, funny things I hear come across the ham radio. There really are many times you will hear something unique, that stands out that grabs your attention. And especially hearing so many different people from all over the US. there is more of a chance for this happening. I have just recently found out when and where "east cars" is run, and glad to say we can pick them up pretty well from here.

So, I have made some changes in the program lineup lately of my station. We run this 24/7 non stop from this location. We have no recorded repeats. It is all LIVE all the time. So many various individuals are heard.

Like one group has this guy they call Ricky Ralph. That group comes on 3902khz around 5:00pm. There are some cool characters on there, that have the most unusual voice characteristics and personalities. In my opinion, these guys could make some extra cash doing voice over work for cartoons or commercials. But there is this dude they call Ricky Ralph. Everytime they say it, I just die....I have never heard Ricky Ralph on the radio as of yet though. But I think it's pretty funny.

Then there was this other fellow from another group who bought this "top of the line frigidaire from Electrolux" . I know some things are just made up for fun, but he swore to God it was true. I thought I'd die. This other guys says for sure winter is on its way, because last night he dreamed about a flock of geese. Well I reckon "that's a good thing" I know I'm sure tired of the heat. And that's a piece of information there, that you won't be hearing on your local news. I'm telling you, sometimes the material you hear on ham radio is way better than the best of the sitcoms.

Now, if any of you guys in any of the groups read this, I hope you know, I think you ALL ARE WONDERFUL and I would not have you change in any way shape or form. But I surely do appreciate those of you who take efforts in maximizing your audio quality. For those of you who are determined to transmit at 2.1khz wide, I will throw this out to you, "why not just try widening it out a little bit, and try not emphasizing your highs so much"? And then check it out on my online receiver to see how much better you can sound? It sure makes it easier to listen to when it's wider . Some of the 40 meter daytime nets have people come on there with the most piercing audio , communication dx'ing quality that sounds as narrow as a toothpick. I don't think they've improved their audio in the last thirty years. Just wanna get that signal out loud ......and "if it works, don't fix it" mentality.....I understand that, I'm just throwing this out there, as "food for thought". oh well.....that's the only thing I have to gripe about , as being a swl as well as a ham myself.

But anyway, I applaud the uniqueness of the personalities in the groups. Anything I've said here is not to be taken in a bad way at all. I love it. Keep on ,keeping on, you hams out there. Don't be too set in your ways to learn something new. And keep on giving us good quality entertainment on the ham bands. Some of you fellows are very creative and a joy to listen to. So I hope you aren't offended. Variety is the spice of life. And That's a Good Thing.
