Newport Receiver Noise Levels
The high noise levels are temporary. An Active Vertical Antenna is Currently being Used
The Newport receiver is temporarily using a wideband active vertical antenna. This coming spring, when it will be easier to erect supports, a wideband horizontal wire antenna will be installed that should be generally better.
Electrical power service is buried in this area. RF line noise is unusually low driving around this area and listening in the AM broadcast band with a car radio, but the FET amplifier in the active antenna can be overloaded by noise anywhere in the radio spectrum and that is the root of the problem.
Despite its sporadically high noise level, the active vertical works very well when noise levels are low. The receiver remote control software has provision to enable remote user antenna switching, so after the horizontal antenna has been installed, you will be able to switch between the two and use whichever happens to be best at particular times and frequencies.
