Battery Storage TemperatureMarch 21st Fact-of-the-Day
Batteries deteriorate continuously at various rates from the time they are manufactured. Rates of deterioration depend on a variety of factors. Some are the same and some are different for different types of batteries. However, storage temperature is an important deterioration factor for all types of batteries. The cooler a battery is kept, the slower it will deteriorate, so long as its temperature remains above freezing. Damaging changes occur in some types of batteries below freezing, so batteries generally should not be stored in a freezer or otherwise in freezing temperatures. A refrigerator is an ideal storage location if batteries are placed in a sealed plastic bag to protect them from condensation and to protect food from chemical leakage; and if they are not placed in a freezing compartment. ©2005 Martek International All rights reserved.
