Dynamic ResistorsMay 5th Fact-of-the-Day
Resistors are the most commonly used component in electronic circuits. In most applications best performance is obtained if resistance values remain as constant as possible with changes in temperature, voltage, light-level, mechanical stress, and anything else that might have an effect. However, resistors that change resistance dynamically with changes in temperature, voltage, light-level, or mechanical stress are used in special cases where such a change can compensate for something else that changes; where resistance change is used to measure something such as temperature, light-level, or mechanical stress; or where it is desired to have temperature, light-level, or mechanical stress control the operation of an electronic circuit. A wide variety of resistors are available for applications like these, including resistors that increase resistance with increasing temperature, decrease resistance with increasing temperature, decrease resistance with increasing light-level, and decrease resistance with increasing voltage. ©2005 Martek International All rights reserved.
