Amplitude Distortion Calculation

Waveform amplitude distortion can be calculated using at least three different methods. One method is using simple equations applying to common electronic circuits. Another method is using Fourier sum for repetitive waveforms or the Fourier integral for non-repetitive waveforms. The third method is using the Legendre polynomial expansion of the input-versus-output signal relationship of an amplifier or other device. That method resolves distortion in terms of orthogonal polynomials (they provide a natural way to solve, expand and interpret solutions to many types of differential equations) The Legendre coefficients can be converted directly into harmonic component amplitudes by means of conversion equations. ©2005 Martek International All rights reserved.
